Situated along the East Coast, Massachusetts hosts plenty of scenic coastline to explore.

From up on the North Shore all the way down to Cape Cod and the Islands.

As a native I’ve covered a pretty decent amount of it myself…or so I had thought.

Over in Marblehead, drive down Ocean Avenue and if you’re paying attention, you may just spot the entrance to Castle Rock Park.

A 1.20 acre park on Marblehead Neck that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Massachusetts Bay.

Follow the short pathway from the entrance off of Ocean Ave. and it will lead you down to the park.

You’ll instantly be greeted by a rather large rock formation, as well as sweeping views of the water and surrounding coastline.

Park History

Known previously as “Great Head,” the park was historically used as a lookout for fishing fleets, as well as pirate and enemy ships.

Today it gets its name from the castle-like private home, Carcassonne Castle, that stands directly beside it.

I first learned about this place from a loved one who took me a few years back.

Since then I have returned on several occasions, despite which season it is, just to take in the views!

More About the Park

As you walk through, you’ll see a stone staircase which leads down to a small beach below.

There you can stroll along the water, admire the waves and search the surrounding shallow tide pools.

Back up above, a bench allows for a nice place to rest and enjoy the sounds of the ocean.

Although a great place to stop off at, Castle Rock Park certainly does not need a full day to explore.

Rather it is a great location for a picnic or to spend some time sightseeing.

I highly recommend it if you’re ever in the area or simply in need of a quick adventure that won’t eat up your whole day.

If you do plan to visit for yourself, the park is open sunrise to sunset.

There is free on-street parking nearby but, be aware that it is limited to two hours.

Oh, and remember to pack your camera!

P.S. When I visit in the Summer, after taking in the views, I like to stop off at the Neck Run Café on my way home.

It is located right down the street from Castle Rock Park at Devereux Beach.

There you can grab one of my favorite summertime classics: the Raspberry-Lime Rickey.

Yum!

One Thought on “Castle Rock Park: Marblehead, MA”

  • The pebble beaches here are an awesome place to find gorgeous shells and remnants of sea glass. It’s a great place to hang around, and it is not very well known so there are not usually any crowds to contend with.
